Why I voted Yes on H.Res. 706
I voted Yes on H.Res. 706, authorizing the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform to initiate or intervene in judicial proceedings to enforce certain subpoenas.
This resolution authorizes the Chairman of the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform to initiate or intervene in federal court to seek declaratory judgments affirming Attorney General Eric Holder's duty to comply with subpoenas issued to him by the committee pertaining to its investigation into Operation Fast and Furious. In addition, this resolution also authorizes the committee the ability to seek appropriate supplemental relief, including injunctive relief.
Congress exercises oversight of the Executive Branch to ensure that no agency, organization, or person acts above the law. The family of Agent Brian Terry and the American people deserve answers through an open and complete investigation, and while my top priority in Congress remains the economy and job creation, the role of Congressional oversight deserves to be exercised to ensure transparency and justice in this important matter.
The resolution was approved by a vote of 258 – 95 – 5.
