Why I voted Yes on H.Res 568
I voted Yes for H.Res 568, Expressing the sense of the House regarding the importance of preventing the Government of Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapons capability.
This bipartisan resolution reaffirms the importance of preventing Iran from acquiring the capability to produce nuclear weapons. It urges an increase in both economic and diplomatic pressure on Iran to prevent their acquisition of nuclear weapons and reach an agreement that includes complete cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the suspension of Iran's uranium-enrichment activities, and a permanent agreement that verifiably assures that Iran's nuclear program is entirely peaceful.
H.Res. 568 also expresses support for the universal rights of the Iranian people and urges the President to reaffirm the unacceptability of an Iran with nuclear-weapons capability and opposition to any policy that would rely on containment as an option in response to the Iranian nuclear threat. A nuclear Iran would lead to dangerous instability in the Middle East and threaten the security of our nation, our allies, and our armed forces and civilians at home and abroad, and I supported this resolution as an important initiative to promote peace in the region and exert diplomatic means to finding a resolution to remove the threat of a nuclear Iran.
The resolution was approved by a vote of 401 – 11 – 9.
