Why I voted Yes on H.R. 5740

Attention: open in a new window. PDFPrint

I voted Yes on H.R. 5740 to extend the National Flood Insurance Program for one-month in order to provide sufficient time for the Senate to consider a long-term reauthorization. The House of Representatives passed its long-term bill on July 12, 2011, by a vote of 406-22 with my support.

The National Flood Insurance Program plays a vital role, but is in need of significant reforms to improve its fiscal health, improve the Federal Emergency Management Agency's flood-mapping process, and move the program towards a market-based approach. I am hopeful that the Senate will complete its work expeditiously and that no further extensions will be necessary.

The bill was approved by a vote of 402 - 18.
