Why I voted Yes on H.R. 4119

Attention: open in a new window. PDFPrint

I voted Yes on H.R. 4119, the Border Tunnel Prevention Act of 2012.

A 2006 law criminalized the construction of illegal smuggling tunnels, but the law does not currently apply to potential conspirators who finance the construction or would-be tunnel users. This bill would subject cross-border tunnel smuggling conspirators and financiers to the same penalties as those who actually construct the tunnels. It also provides U.S. law enforcement with the ability to seize property and assets moved through a tunnel, and to use advanced surveillance when investigating tunnel-related smuggling.

I support this bill which will help our law enforcement officers keep our borders secure from illegal activity.

The bill was approved by a vote of 416 – 4.
